A Life Devoted to the Sacred Arts

Angeline Sheril A J — Cultural Artist

Born with an instinct for movement and a calling to preserve culture, Angeline Sheril A J has dedicated every year of her life to mastering the living languages of Tamil Nadu — its classical temples, its village fields, its ancient martial rhythms. For over fourteen years, she has performed, taught, and carried these traditions across continents.

“When I dance, I am not performing — I am remembering who we are.”

— Angeline Sheril A J

She mastered Bharatanatyam under rigorous classical training at Bridge Academy, Chennai, before earning dual postgraduate degrees — a Master of Fine Arts in Bharatanatyam from Annamalai University and a Master of Performing Arts in Folk Dance from Bharathidasan University, Trichy.

What sets Angeline apart is not simply technical brilliance — it is her singular vision. She performs not for applause, but as an act of preservation. In an era when ancient forms are quietly disappearing, she stands as their most passionate guardian, carrying them from the sacred temple corridors of Chidambaram to international stages in Malaysia, Kuwait, Mauritius, and the Seychelles.

Bharatanatyam classical dance performance

Bharatanatyam

The Mother of Classical Indian Dance

Born in the sanctum sanctorum of Tamil temples, Bharatanatyam is not merely a dance — it is a divine language. Through intricate hand gestures called Mudras, expressive facial storytelling in Abhinaya, and thunderous rhythmic footwork, the dancer becomes a living scripture.

Rooted in the Natya Shastra — the ancient Sanskrit text on performing arts — Bharatanatyam was once performed only by Devadasis, women consecrated to temple service. It was their devotion made visible, their prayer made physical. After decades of suppression, the art was reclaimed and elevated to the global stage.

Parai drum performance

Parai

The Sacred Voice of Tamil Civilization

Long before written language, the Parai drum was the Tamil people's means of communication. Its resonant beats announced births, deaths, harvests, and wars. In the hands of Angeline Sheril, this ancient percussion art form is reawakened — its sacred rhythms reverberating across modern stages with ancestral authority.

The Parai was systematically suppressed during colonial rule, its practitioners marginalized. The revival of Parai is not merely artistic — it is an act of cultural justice. To play the Parai is to reclaim the voice of Tamil civilization itself.

Karagattam

Devotion in Perfect Balance

Imagine balancing an ornate, flower-laden pot on the crown of your head while performing complex rhythmic footwork, spinning, and bending — without using your hands. This is Karagattam: a meditation in motion, a test of supreme bodily mastery that has been refined over centuries in the temples of Tamil Nadu.

Originally performed as an offering to the rain goddess Mariamman, Karagattam connects the human body to the cosmic order. The weight of the pot on the head symbolizes carrying the divine — a devotional burden gladly borne. Angeline Sheril's Karagattam has broken World Records, elevating this temple tradition to universal recognition.

Oyilattam

The Graceful Dance of the Paddy Fields

Born in the agricultural heartland of Tamil Nadu, Oyilattam is the dance of community and harvest. Performed in groups to the rhythmic beat of drums, dancers move in synchronized formations — their silk costumes flowing, their footwork echoing the heartbeat of a people who found joy in the shared labour of the land.

In a world of individualistic spectacle, Oyilattam stands apart as a deeply communal art form. It cannot be performed alone. Its beauty lives in the collective — in the synchronization of many bodies becoming one fluid expression of cultural identity. It is Tamil Nadu's living testament to the power of togetherness.

Silambam bamboo staff martial art

Silambam

The Ancient Tamil Martial Art

Silambam is poetry written with a bamboo staff. An ancient Tamil martial art dating back over 2000 years, its practitioners wield the long staff in fluid arcs of motion that are simultaneously combat technique and choreography — warfare and dance indistinguishable. At the International Silambam Championship in Malaysia 2024, Angeline Sheril brought home Silver and Bronze medals, proving that this ancient art form competes at the highest global level.

Mentioned in ancient Sangam literature and traded along the Silk Road as far as Greece and Rome, Silambam is one of the oldest martial arts in human history. Its revival is part of a broader movement to reclaim Tamil civilizational heritage — to demonstrate that the ancient world's most sophisticated cultures lived and flourished in South India.
